Javits Encourages Green Initiatives
Javits long ago jumped on the green band wagon and encourages its clients and service providers to do the same. Back in 2004, Javits launched its own green initiative program by replacing the majority of lighting fixtures with more efficient fluorescent bulbs, ballasts, and metal halide lamps and since then has made a concerted effort to stop waste and help save the environment by incorporating cost and energy saving initiatives into the daily operation of the facility.
Javits has also revamped its trash removal policy to reduce the overall volume and costs by recycling its paper and corrugated cardboard in on-site compactors. These also contain glass and plastic, and aluminum cans collected from specially marked bins on the trade show floor. Javits-contracted trash hauler takes the compactors to their facility in New Jersey where recyclables are separated and sent on to specific recycling plants.
Decorators work with Javits in recycling used and disposable carpets and Centerplate LLC, Javits’ exclusive caterer, is testing biodegradable and “Green” packaging and utensils. Composting collection bins have also been placed in kitchen prep areas.
In 2008, the Javits Center began its’ green initiatives involving chemicals in the workplace by replacing traditional cleaners and solvents with Green Seal rated products. All hand soaps on the premises are Green Certified. We encouraged show managers, contractors and exhibitors to use Green Certified products while in the Center.
