For its first-ever event SC World Congress chose New York City as its destination and Javits as its venue. |
SC World Congress Conference & Expo
Javits was pleased to host the first ever world-wide SC World Congress when the event debuted at the center in mid-December. Show director Tony Keefe, of SC Magazine/Haymarket Media said New York City was chosen for the large number of financial and healthcare industries that could benefit from a conference on IT security. And they did.
It was not without its challenges however. “Trying to launch a new show is incredibly tough, some say impossible”, Mr. Keefe said. “And when the financial markets took a plunge we were worried. But the conference did very well. The exhibitors were happy, and we had the best speakers in the industry.”
Javits received an excellent review for customer service. Mr. Keefe was also very happy with the service the he received from Special Events Manager, Anne Houlihan and Convention Services Manager, John Bryan. “They were tremendously helpful,” he said. He also praised the exemplary service on site.
Mr. Keefe looks forward to exhibiting again next year and increasing attendance at the show. Javits is more than happy to be the host for the 2nd annual SC World Congress in 2009.

Business Journal Events Make TradeShow Week’s “50 Fastest Growing Shows”
For the second year in a row, AccessoriesTheShow and Moda Manhattan have been recognized as two of the "50 Fastest-Growing Shows," by Tradeshow Week -- the leading voice of the exhibition industry. AccessoriesTheShow received two awards for its January and August exhibitions and Moda Manhattan received three for its January, August and May shows. The prestigious awards were measured on the percentage of growth and total net square footage of growth from 2005 to 2007.
Leaders in the women's fashion industry, AccessoriesTheShow is one of the world's largest all-accessory trade exhibitions and Moda Manhattan is a well recognized bridge to designer Ready-To-Wear trade exhibition. Together, AccessoriesTheShow, re-launched in 2001 and Moda Manhattan, launched in 2002, have continuously grown in size over the years, tripling the amount of exhibitor space to 150,000 net square feet, and bringing in crowds of over 14,000 attendees.
The overall success of the shows coupled with a noticeable hole in the market compelled Business Journals Inc., a multi-media company that owns and produces AccessoriesTheShow and Moda Manhattan, to acquire two additional exhibitions, Fame in 2001, a Junior/Young Contemporary fashion trade show, and MRket in 2007, a high-end menswear show in Las Vegas.

| Javits Staff Recertified in the Life Saving Tools |
In compliance with the American Heart Association’s guidelines to recertify users of Automated External Defibrillators, CPR and First Aid, the one-hundred employees who make up Javits' medical response team were recertified at the end of 2008.
Several years ago, the National Institutes of Health-sponsored Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) trial showed that training volunteers to perform CPR and use AEDs placed in public buildings, doubled the number of survivors from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest compared to training bystanders to deliver CPR alone.
Studies have found that CPR plus
use of an AED in the United States and Canada saves
522 lives a year, or more than one life per day.
Javits has 22 AEDs strategically placed
around the center.

Governor David Paterson Offers Balanced Executive Budget
In mid-December New York State Governor David Paterson released a proposed Executive Budget which would eliminate the largest budget deficit in State history – a $1.7 billion current-year shortfall and a $13.7 billion 2009-10 deficit.
The Governor’s proposal calls for the state to tighten its belt with reductions that spread across every area of state spending plus targeted increases in revenue.
Some notable revenue increases include: A new, additional 18 percent sales tax on non-diet soft drinks to combat obesity and related diseases; eliminating the sales tax exemption on clothing and footwear under $110, replacing it with two exemption periods during which clothing and footwear under $500 would not be subject to sales tax; conforming the state sales tax to New York City’s practice of taxing personal services, such as barbering, massages, and hair salons; repealing an ineffective sales tax cap on gasoline; and other actions.
Governor Paterson did not propose any broad-based income tax proposals, but did include $3.1 billion in recurring General Fund revenue actions. These proposals ensure that tax burdens are fairly distributed, improve consistency with other taxing jurisdictions, and close loopholes, among other objectives.
